Allowances Under the 8th CPC: HRA, DA & TA

Last updated: 4 November 2026

Beyond Basic Pay, three allowances make up most of a government employee's take-home salary. Here's what's officially confirmed today, and what remains an open question for the 8th CPC.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

Official (current rates)

HRA is calculated as a percentage of Basic Pay, based on city classification. The rates below are the current 7th CPC slabs: 24/16/8% originally, revised to 27/18/9% when DA crossed 25% and to 30/20/10% once DA crossed 50% (Department of Expenditure OM No. 2/5/2017-E.II(B) dated 7 July 2017). Minimum HRA floors of ₹5,400 / ₹3,600 / ₹1,800 also apply and are not modelled by the calculator.

X (Metro)30%Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad
Y (Tier-2)20%State capitals & larger cities
Z (Other)10%Remaining areas

Not Yet Announced How HRA will be structured under the 8th CPC has not been officially confirmed. For the revised salary, this site's calculator assumes HRA restarts at the lowest slabs (24% / 16% / 8%) because DA resets to 0% — the pattern followed when the 7th CPC was implemented. This is an estimation assumption only.

Dearness Allowance (DA)

Official (mechanism)

DA compensates for inflation and is revised twice a year based on the All-India Consumer Price Index. On implementation of a new pay commission, DA has conventionally been merged into Basic Pay and reset to 0%, then begins accruing again from the next revision cycle — this is the historical pattern, not a confirmed decision for the 8th CPC.

Travel Allowance (TA)

Not Yet Announced

TA depends on pay level and city classification, and has historically been revised alongside the pay matrix. No official figures exist yet for how TA will change under the 8th CPC.
