How Basic Pay Is Calculated Under a Pay Commission
Last updated: 4 November 2026
Basic Pay is the foundation every other allowance is calculated from, so understanding the mechanics matters more than any single headline number.
The core formula
New Basic Pay = Existing Basic Pay × Fitment Factor, then rounded to the nearest value on the applicable pay matrix cell. Official This is exactly how the 7th CPC converted 6th CPC pay-band salaries into the new matrix.
Worked example (illustrative)
Estimate Say an employee's current Basic Pay is ₹35,400 (7th CPC, Level 6 entry). Using this site's illustrative 1.92× fitment factor:
₹35,400 × 1.92 = ₹67,968 → rounded to the nearest matrix cell
This is a scenario calculation, not a prediction of the actual number the 8th CPC will notify.
Why it isn't always a clean multiplication
In practice, pay commissions round figures to fit predefined matrix cells, and some levels have historically received adjustments beyond the uniform fitment factor to fix compression between levels. The 8th CPC's actual methodology has not been announced.
